Chris Nolan has revealed the title of Batman 3: it will be called “The Dark Knight Rises and it WON’T be shot in 3D (they’ll shoot in IMAX format instead).

In the same interview, Nolan announced something that Batman movie fans have been debating and speculating about, ever since the end credits rolled on The Dark Knight: Nolan has stated that The Riddler will NOT be the villain featured in The Dark Knight Rises.

Catwoman is a fictional character associated with DC Comics' Batman franchise. The supervillainess was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, partially inspired by Kane's second cousin by marriage, Ruth Steel.

The original and most widely known Catwoman, Selina Kyle, first appears in Batman #1 (Spring 1940) in which she is known as The Cat. As an adversary of Batman, she was a whip-carrying burglar with a taste for high-stake thefts.

Since the 1990s, Catwoman has been featured in an eponymous series that cast her as an anti-heroine rather than a supervillainess. The character has been one of Batman's most enduring love interests, and has occasionally been depicted as his one true love.

A popular figure, Catwoman has been featured in most media adaptations related to Batman. Actresses Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether, and Eartha Kitt introduced her to a large audience on the 1960s Batman television series and the 1966 Batman motion picture. Michelle Pfeiffer portrayed the character in 1992's Batman Returns. Halle Berry starred in a stand-alone Catwoman film in 2004, although only loosely based on the Batman character. Catwoman is #51 on Wizard magazine's "100 Greatest Villains of All Time" list.

Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes says that he hopes the revived "Batman" franchise will have as long a life as the studio's other big cash cow - the "Harry Potter" films.

“We look at Harry Potter. It’s fantastic to have franchises that last that long. We want to do that with Batman and Superman and perhaps Sherlock Holmes. The sequels are as good, with new characters added, as were the originals. That wasn’t the case in the years ago" said Bewkes during the company's Q4 earnings call yesterday.

More major sequels are in order too - "Warners has more tentpoles as an on-going strategy that very much lifts its distribution and performance. We think that’s going to hold up our slate in the 2009 - 2010 period. We’ve got four more big tentpoles coming this year.”

This commitment comes despite the general impression that director Christopher Nolan's third "Batman" feature, currently being discussed but still quite a few years off, will be his last.

The speculation can finally end. After much huh bub the producer Michael Uslan has revealed that the movie will be ready to rock for 2011 Quote from Courier Post.

“It’s not just a great comic book film, it’s a great film,” says Uslan who also produced “The Spirit” and has three more films in various stages of development, “When I first saw “The Dark Knight,’ I was so happy I wanted to cry.”

Uslan will be onboard as executive producer for the “Dark Knight” sequel, which he estimates will be theaters by 2011. As for the identity of the next round of Batman’s supervillains and love interests, Uslan remains tight-lipped. “It’s one of those deals where if I told you, I’d have to kill you,” he says with a chuckle.

The 81st Annual Academy Award nominations have been announced with a few surprises and some glaring omissions.

'Best Film' played it safe - though four (Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, Slumdog) were pretty much locked, that fifth slot many were hoping the Academy would go for something acclaimed but more risky or mainstream than they usually go for like "The Wrestler" "Revolutionary Road" or "The Dark Knight". Instead they opted for the little seen but very Academy-friendly Weinstein-produced vehicle "The Reader".

In fact that trio of films (Wrestler, Road, Knight) were awkwardly missing in some other key areas like director and screenplay, though all got acting noms and 'Knight' in particular scored a lot of technical nods.

In sheer number of nominations "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" lead the way with thirteen; followed by "Slumdog Millionaire" with ten; "The Dark Knight" and "Milk" with eight; "Wall-E" with six; "Frost/Nixon", "Doubt" and "The Reader" with five.

Notable omissions and strangeness - "Gran Torino" "Che" "I've Loved You So Long" not getting any major nominations. "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" only scoring a nom for Cruz, "Happy-Go-Lucky" scoring a best script but not a best actress nomination, "In Bruges" only getting a screenplay nom, and "Gomorra" missing out on Best Foreign Language Film.

One very welcome surprise was Michael Shannon, the actor who has essentially been ignored by most of the other critics and guilds getting a nomination for his brilliant supporting turn in "Revolutionary Road" (as I said in the first part of my Best Films of 2008 list).

If you’re one of the DC Comics faithful and were hoping the dual box office successes of “Iron Man” and “The Dark Knight” would mean more familiar properties on the big screen, you might be disappointed. According to “Dark Knight” scribe David Goyer, many DC Comic films in development at Warner Bros. are currently in a holding pattern — including his planned adaptation of “The Flash” and his Green Arrow prison-break caper “Super Max.”

“A lot of the DC movies at Warner Bros. are all on hold,” Goyer told IESB. “They’re going to come up with some new plan, methodology, things like that so everything has just been pressed pause on at the moment.”

Goyer said the timing was no surprise, either.

“It was the doubleheader of both ‘Iron Man’ and ‘The Dark Knight’ coming out,” said Goyer, “so more than ever I think they’ve realized, I think DC was responsible for 15 percent of Warner Bros’ revenue this year, something crazy like that, so they realized that comic books, it’s become a new genre, one of the most successful genres.”

Still, you’d think that after “Iron Man” grossed $318 million domestically, while “The Dark Knight” did $531 million in the US, studio execs would be fast-tracking every comic book hero they could get their hands on. However, for each superhero blockbuster there are two or three disappointments (see: “Superman Returns,” “Hulk,” “Punisher: War Zone”). At the same time, “Iron Man” and “Dark Knight” weren’t your typical super hero flicks. It seems Warner Bros has taken a look at these adaptations — and their huge profits — and decided to rethink their approach to other comic book properties.

With the economy looking to make 2009 and beyond potentially shaky years at the box office, WB could be thinking that its DC properties are far too valuable to screw up.

Dark Knight and Iron Man Movies dominate with Hancock involved.

2008 was a record year for the Hollywood box office, with both North American and overseas box office receipts setting new records.

Action films such as The Dark Knight, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Iron Man punched up box office receipts over 2007 by two per cent in North America and four per cent internationally.

About 1.36 billion tickets were sold in Canada and the U.S. in 2008, down from 1.4 billion in 2007, according to the National Association of Theater Owners. But ticket prices were up, resulting in record ticket receipts of $9.78 billion US.

Hollywood studios set a new record internationally of $9.9 billion US at the box office, with Indiana Jones, Kung Fu Panda, Mamma Mia and Wall-E among the favourites overseas.

The Dark Knight was the top grossing movie of the year, bringing in $531 million US in North American and $466 million US overseas. The most successful superhero title of all time, it is second only to Titanic in total box office revenues.

Many of the franchises that have been most successful for Hollywood studios, including the Shrek and Harry Potter series, had no new installments in 2008, and the studios had been concerned it would be a poor year for movie receipts.

The recession also hit hard in the second half of the year, but moviegoers didn't appear to care.

Speed Racer, Love Guru flopped
A total of 24 film titles brought in more than $100 million US in Canada and the U.S., including Sex and the City and Get Smart, both adaptations of TV shows and Quantum of Solace, the latest Bond picture.

And new franchises had a good start in 2008, among them Twilight, Kung Fu Panda and Iron Man.

High-profile flops included Speed Racer and The Love Guru.

Each of the six major Hollywood studios — Warner, Paramount, Disney, Sony, Universal, Fox —improved ticket sales.

The total number of new releases was down, at 148 films, compared to 160 in 2007. In part, that is a reflection of the Hollywood writers strike that stalled production earlier in the year.

Apparently, all the rumors surfacing around "Batman 3" hold no truth in them. Addressing the so-called scoops about "The Dark Knight" sequel to MTV News, scribbler David S. Goyer completely rejected the speculations that director Christopher Nolan has been signed on, that the pre-production will start early 2009, and that the possible casting include Johnny Depp and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Throwing cold water to the flaming fire, the "Blade Trinity" director stated that they are all merely rumors stating, "It's all B.S. ALL of it." In fact, he insisted that no official talk has been done between him and Nolan about the future film plan for Batman. "Chris and I haven't even talked about it. He quite understandably is taking a long, long vacation and wants to purge himself," he explained.

Still, he also confessed that they have loosely discussed themes and ideas. "We have mused here and there [but] I mean Chris is pretty much a one movie at a time kind of guy," he said. "I wish I could tell you more. There really isn't anything to tell." Lifting a bit of hope amidst the rumors denial, Goyer promised, "If and when [Chris is] ready to talk - we'll talk."

Speculations over "Batman 3" which is said to be tentatively entitled "The Caped Crusade" has grown since "Dark Knight" displayed its amazing run at the box office back in July. Up to date the sequel to "Batman Begins" which reportedly made with a budget of $185 million have grossed around $988 million worldwide and has become the second highest selling movie of all time following James Cameron's 1997 "Titanic".

The Producers Guild of America has tapped the producers of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “The Dark Knight,” “Frost/Nixon,” “Milk” and “Slumdog Millionaire” as the nominees for its Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award.
The winner, determined by voting of the 3,600 members of the PGA, will be announced Jan. 24 at the Hollywood Palladium.

The PGA announced the nominated producers Monday including Kathleen Kennedy & Frank Marhsall and Cean Chaffin for “Benjamin Button”; Christopher Nolan, Charles Roven and Emma Thomas for “The Dark Knight”; Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Eric Fellner for “Frost/Nixon”; Dan Jinks & Bruce Cohen for “Milk”; and Christopher Colson for “Slumdog Millionaire.”

“No Country For Old Men” won last year.

The PGA’s selections of accredited producers have been used by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences over the past two years as guidelines in determining the nominated producers in the Oscars’ best picture category.

Pat Hingle Dies

Pat Hingle, the veteran character actor best remembered by fanboys as Gotham City's Commissioner Gordon in Tim Burton's Batman movie and its three sequels, has died. He was 84.

According to his family, Hingle suffered from myelodysplasia, a type of blood cancer, and passed away at his home Saturday night.

Hingle's career in theater, television and film spanned more than 50 years, beginning with an uncredited 1954 bit part as a bartender going toe-to-toe with Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront.

He played opposite Clint Eastwood in Hang 'Em High, The Gauntlet and Sudden Impact; served as Sally Field's father in Norma Rae and Warren Beatty's dad in Splendor in the Grass; and hammed it up with Richard Pryor in Brewster's Millions.

Broadway credits included Elia Kazan's original staging of Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and a Tony-nominated turn in William Inge's The Dark at the Top of the Stairs. He popped up in such TV shows as The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Fugitive, Mission: Impossible and Magnum, P.I.

But it was as Jim Gordon, Gotham's top cop, that he achieved his greatest fame, first in 1989's Batman, followed by Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin.
